Today is National Cappuccino Day! If you're posting on social media, be sure to tag #CappuccinoDay.
What do customers want to know about cappuccinos?
Americans are searching for the word "cappuccino" more than 100,000 times per month on average!1 Sure, they may be looking for the nearest coffee shop, but nearly half of those searches are looking for "cappuccino vs. latte", with other top searches being "cappuccino vs. mocha", "what is a cappuccino", and "how to make a cappuccino". These are questions we can answer! More importantly, this search data gives us some guidance on what to focus on in our content as well as our sales presentation to customers.
If you have a shelf talker next to your espresso machine that lists the drinks that it can make, today is the day to go into more detail about what exactly those drinks are. For example the Jura S8 lists these specialties: Ristretto, Espresso, Coffee, Macchiato, Latte, Cappuccino, Flat White and Latte Macchiato (along with several milk and water options). Notice that there are no chocolate (mocha) options listed. Can your customer make a mocha with this machine? Would it still be a cappuccino if they did?? Knowing that customers can be unsure about the coffee terminology means we shouldn't be shy about going into more detail about the distinctions, or mentioning popular variations that aren't specifically listed.
Products to Feature for National Cappuccino Day
The superautomatic espresso makers, such as those by Jura, are a great way to host a demo for National Cappuccino Day. Jura supports their retailers with sampling supplies and discounted demonstrations machines. Give them advance notice of your plans, and they will work with you to make the event a success! Worried about staff time and managing the machine, refilling the milk and the coffee? It's a consideration for sure, but offering a demonstration will really help your staff learn how to operate the unit and enable them to differentiate the features on what can be some really intimidating equipment. Experience is the best teacher!
If you have an experienced barista on staff, a Breville machine such as the Barista Express is fantastic demo for a true DIY customer. These manual machines will make your customer a better barista because they'll have to (get to!) play with the grind, temperature, and shot volume. In other words, they'll really learn about the espresso process. For some customers this is appealing and for others this is an annoying hurdle between them and their caffeinated state. Hosting a demo day where an experienced staff member can show the unit and the finished espresso results can make these machines much more approachable.
Feature your local coffee shop!
National Cappuccino Day is an easy day to cross promote another business, and the drink itself is a great debate starter in the coffee world since the recipe can vary significantly among coffee shops or even baristas. Some will serve cappuccinos with equal parts espresso, steamed milk and milk foam, while others serve espresso and milk foam only. This has led to the question that all cappuccino customers dread....."Wet or dry?". We all know what the right answer is, but give your customers a chance to share their preference in your social media feed or in person with voting jars at the counter (as part of a giveaway perhaps?)
